fly fishing shop - whats happening about the scenes

Been a rough little period weather wise, strong NW winds with heavy rain in the mountains plus a good dose from the south too has seen all rivers rise and become dirty. Local fishermen will be heading for the vast array of lakes we have locally, then there's the newly reopened spring creeks which stay clear and fishable most of the time. The wind makes it difficult regardless, so finding a sheltered spot on the leeward shore of a lake helps, but for the spring creeks you need to pick your day as they have little shelter.Heard of a few salmon seen in the Rakaia Gorge! That's good news and apparently some have been caught in the lower river, if that is the case people are keeping quiet about any successes so far... River will be out of action for a while with more rain up the back today, but once it comes right I'd suggest it would be worth a look

A little trick you'll like!!

I was reminded of this the other day, a great tip for a quick release when carrying long leaders, so for those of you new to the the newsletter and new to fly fishing, this is for you!

In NZ it's common to use long leaders of maybe a couple of rod lengths in total, and this presents difficulties to get it out and in use quickly when a fish is spotted.

The solution is to instead of winding your leader right in is to hook your fly high up on one of the rod guides, about the 3rd one from the tip, then take your leader back down around your reel base, then wind up the slack so you end up with almost two rod lengths of leader/line outside of the rod tip.

And now for the good bit: When the fish is spotted with your rod tip over the water, take the leader off from around the reel base and release it so the leader swings down and forms a loop between fly and rod tip, (note this doesn't work if there are any twists in the leader so when you hook the leader around the reel check it's not twisted)

And the good bit: next a quick sharp tap with your finger down on your rod just above the handle will result in the fly releasing itself onto the water! Perfect!

High Country Opening

Missing Strikes - Fly Fishing Tips

A recent question: I have noticed that I am missing a few strikes lately. Am i striking to hard???? Or maybe too slow??

And it sometimes goes like that and you can miss strikes for no apparent reason. Sometime the hook just doesn't connect, or doesn't connect with anything very solid and pull free. If you’re using an indicator strike as quickly as possible because it dips when the fish has the fly in it's mouth and any delay gives it time to reject the fly.

But an indicator isn't fool proof, for instance if a fish turns and follows the nymph downstream then takes it, the indicator won’t necessarily ‘indicate’ immediately because everything is traveling in the same direction downstream, likewise the nymph can land downstream of the indicator so in effect there’s slack in the tippet between nymph and indicator so there’s a delay before the indicator ‘indicates’ as the slack is taken up. In both situations it gives the fish time to reject the fly....

At other times the fish will just mouth/taste the fly, or just bump it with their nose...

Another time when the indicator will fail is in slow water, as there's no current pulling the indicator away from the fish. And conversely indicators work best in faster water where the current speeds the process up.

So the way to become more successful? Well I've said this often before; it's to watch the fish whenever you can, watch and react to what it does. If you see his mouth open and close 'STRIKE', if you see him move towards your nymph assume he's grabbed it and tighten up. Learn to anticipate the take, if you think he's grabbed it tighten up. I say tighten up as if you strike with full force and the fish hasn't got the nymph you'll spook it.
It’s good to learn to watch the fish whenever you can see it, and respond to what it does rather than rely totally on an indicator, you'll definitely catch more fish by doing so.

And can you strike too hard? well yes, but the most likely problem then will be broken tippet and I guess you can tear the fly from the fishes mouth.

Using droppers - Fly Fishing Tip

Traditionally as we learn to fly fish we tend to fish just one fly as it avoid tangles. As we progress and our casting improves it allows many more options.

The benefits of the different types of dropper
When using a Dry it acts as an indicator
Using a heavy 'bomb' to sink a smaller more natural sized nymph into the fishes zone. ie Tongariro style

One fly can act as an attractor, ie a gold bead head nymph to bring the fish over for a closer look allowing it to take the nearby more natural imitation

It gives the fish the choice, noting that your first cast is often the most likely to catch a fish, showing the fish two eatable offering increases the chance that he'll take one or other of them

Types of Droppers;

The easiest and most common is the Dry with a Nymph tied off the bend of the dries hook. This is a pretty full proof method and covers the two options of water surface and water column. The Dry also works as an indicator so larger visible flies like a Royal Wulf or Humpy Blowfly are good choices. Parachute Adams are also good as the parachute design floats well and supports the weight of the nymph and the fish love them. The length of tippet between the two flies should be equal to the depth you want the nymphs to sink to. But also I like to keep them longer than the length of the fish you are likely to catch, two reasons for this, if the fish takes the nymph the dry can end up hooking the fish in the body or tail when you're playing it which makes it very hard to land them but the hook can also scratch fish quite badly on the back (at least I think this is the cause)

The next is the two nymph rig, these can be tied the same way off the hook bend but I prefer to tie a proper dropper as the flies move more independently then. I use the blood knot to join tippets, so I just leave one with a longer tag and tie the fly onto that, they are good as they stick out at right angles. These aren't the strongest of knots so it pays to retie them frequently. However Micro Rings are a good alternative and have become very popular because they are quick and easy to retie your tippets and set up a new dropper. The two nymph rig is usually fished in tandem with an indicator and the nymph combination can be anything from two small nymphs to the bomb and glo bugs used on the Tongariro

Personally I like fishing two small nymphs without an indicator, a small tungsten and an unweight nymph, sometimes with a gold or copper bead as an attractor but usually a black bead ....sometimes two bead heads even, and sometime I fish this under a Parachute Adams if I want an indicator. It's a nice way to fish and increase the catch rate so if you're looking to add something to your fishing this summer then experiment with the double rig.

Leaders; - Fly Fishing Tip

I learnt a lesson the other day, a pretty simple one really, after spending time fishing in windy conditions with not much success with fish being easily spooked we got a day with no wind! - But we were still spooking fish, not getting the hook ups - time to do something different.....

With no wind we could lengthen the leader substantially by adding longer and lighter tippet sections. Watching the results the leader was landing much more softly on the water and a long way ahead of the fish while the floating line was also well out of the way.....end result was we started catching fish again.

Several little clues to what has happened here;

Firstly the weight of the leader landing on the water appeared at times to be spooking fish. We had been using shorter heavier leaders to help cast into the wind on previous days.

Secondly the fish seemed to be seeing the floating line at times if the cast wasn't spot on. That had certainly been the case on the windy days when accuracy was difficult - time and again the fish moved away after the cast. So the longer leader gave more room for error

Another little thing that I've noticed is that if you get a bit lazy when retying tippet, as the leader shortens with each replacement the diameter increases, this puts the heavier butt section closer to the fish once again and that extra weight landing close to the fish can be enough to alert them. Easy enough to fix, just tie in some intermediate weight tippet so that you keep the leader tapering down in small steps.

The last little message to take from this is - Don't be afraid to try different things, experiment, work out why you're not catching fish - it makes the success even sweeter when it comes......

Carrying Long Leaders - Fly Fishing Tip

I was reminded of this the other day. I was first shown this by one of my guiding clients many years ago and it's a great way to carry long leaders set up ready to go, and it has a nice little release trick too so read on;

Long leaders cause quite a few problems as we start out fly fishing, and for visiting anglers whom may normally use much shorter leaders. It can be frustrating getting all that leader out to start casting, getting it caught in anything and everything.....

The easiest way to carry them on your rod is to hook your fly onto a guide a comfortable reach up your rod, (the longer the leader the further up it needs to go) keeping the leader tight bring the leader back down and hook it around the reel foot, then wind in the slack line onto your reel. Care needs to be taken not to twist the leader.
This means that now as you walk up the river spotting fish you are ready for almost instant action.

As soon as a fish is spotted, lift the leader off from around the reel seat, take care not to twist it, hold the rod out over the water and release the leader so that the line hangs down over the water in a nice loop still connected to the rod via the fly.

Next is the good bit! To release the fly tap the top of the rod with your finger, the fly will bounce off and you can then immediately start casting and stripping line and thus avoid all those tangles etc (Some flies hang on a bit tighter and need an extra tap)

Long leaders left on the reel will curl up a bit, so before you start fishing it's a good idea to give them a stretch to remove the curl. I just stretch them by hand, but that can burn your thumb if you hold too tight so be careful!

Indicators; - Fly Fishing Tip

One of the local High Country farmers came into the shop during the week, one of the things he was after was some indicators......Indicators, crikey I smiled to myself, you've got more indicators walking around your paddocks than I could possible ever sell...... I showed him the knot and he was set, just had to catch one of his sheep....

Now there are many creative indicators systems in use out there, all the old hands have their favourite. But it's hard to beat a bit of wool. This is the knot I use, just a half hitch, you pull it tight then make an extra loop which you fold over the wool too, this acts as a lock, keeps all in place. This knot is less likely to break than the slip knot style. Trim the wool to size and away you go.

To take it off, pull the wool apart at one end, generally but not always that will open the knot.

Fly Casting Tip - Your ruler.

Here's a little tip I find very useful in general sight fishing but particularly when casting to fish close to willows, over hanging grass etc.

I find I can cast time and time again to the same fish, missing willows by centimeters, by having the line land at exactly the right length. Here's how you do it.

Simply, your line hand is your ruler, by maintaining a firm grip of the line in the one spot, you'll know with each subsequent cast the line will only go a certain distance. It may fall back closer to you or the leader may not fully extend, but if there's a willow 5 cms beyond your fly you'll never hook it - as long as you maintain your grip in the same place. If your first cast is a little long strip in as the fly drifts back, as the line reaches the right length grip the line in that spot and the next cast will be the right length. Even when you need to strip quite a bit of line, you can still keep a grip at that same spot, use your other fingers for stripping, then when you shoot the line out again you'll have exactly the right length

Ok you can take this one step further, if the fish doesn't take your fly, as soon as it's safely behind the fish, pick it up smoothly off the water, then without a false cast, (or a maximum of one) put it right back down again. With a bit of practice you can accurately show the fish your fly many many times very quickly. You'll find it's much easier to pick up the line early like this rather than later when it's at your feet

The New Season

Well I never managed to get out on open day, was a question of take the family skiing or go fishing, the family won out, but I did get out on the 2nd Sunday and went for a walk. No shortage of fish and eager enough, mostly rainbows up to 7lbs and a stunning day as you can see from the picture;

The past 12 seasons I've spent working as a guide - and this was the first fish I've had when not wearing a guides hat as I've all but hang up my guiding boots for the time being. So for the first time in an age I could go out and just go fishing, didn't need to 'save it for my next client' so I had a great time just 'being a punter' again and enjoying the fishing and the environment as it should be enjoyed.....

Sounds very like it's going to be a mouse year from the early reports I've heard so fingers crossed, and if that's the case area surrounded by beach forest should yeild some big fish this year, lets hope so

As you can see from the pictures the results are pretty spectaular. I haven't had time to try them yet myself but are looking forward to it. The ablity to create life like flies has always been something I aspired to so it should be interesting. The effects are created by using the Virtual Nymph products and then coloring them in with marker pens. I have some new pen packs too so everything is there that's needed to get started including a CD with tying steps. The flies are prodominately Northern Hemisphere so part of the fun will be to design NZ patterns with this stuff
